Hello Everyone! We are running headfirst into the new year and our girls are doing great!
On January 10th BGM hosted a lock-in at Beatty recreation center. With games, dancing, and great bonding, the girls had a blast! We hope that this fun experience created lasting bonds and long lasting relationships. Special thanks to our volunteers and leaders who made sure the young ladies had a fun and safe time. Mark your calendars! BGM is hosting it's first Girls Conference on April 18, 2020, at the Martin De Porres center. Join us as we provide workshops with some of Columbus' leading women ready to pour knowledge into our young ladies. More details coming soon! Brown Girls Have 2020 Vision!1/8/2020 ![]() The year of 2019 ended on an extremely positive note! Our Brown Girls are as pumped as ever about our programs and love how we are stepping outside of our comfort zone. Last year we had an amazing Mother's Day Brunch, increased Brown Girls enrollment and received several awards for the work that we have been doing in the community. With so many good things happening, what can Brown Girls mentoring do next? Well, on January 4th we had an amazing fundraiser at Chipotle and we received so much love and support from the community. Our volunteers and mentors were amazing with the guests and even several of our Brown girls stopped by to show their support. We want to say thank you to Chipotle, our mentors, volunteers, and community who came out and supported our cause. This coming weekend we will be hosting our first Lock-in and we look forward to the games and fun that will be had by all! It's important that our girls not only focus on growth and being the best versions of themselves that they can be, but that they also have fun with their peers. This year, Brown Girls Mentoring is looking forward to growing our family as well as venturing into new territory as we continue our year of development. Keep a lookout for our upcoming Brown Girls Digital magazine, set to be released on January 15th, 2020.

Brown Girls Think Big!6/25/2019 Hello all! We have some exciting updates in today's blog, and we cannot wait to show you what our Brown Girl volunteers and mentees have been working on! On June 15th, our volunteers met with several of our current and future Brown Girls to discuss how we can improve our Brown Girls Mentoring program. Held at the Martin Luther King branch at 10:30 am, a light breakfast was served to help wake us up and get the mental juices flowing. It is vital that we not only share our various areas of knowledge and skills but we should also make sure we are listening to their voices. To be a successful youth organization, we must understand what is essential to our Brown Girls and keep them engaged. Too often adults are so busy teaching our youth, that we do not take the chance to listen to them. By listening, we can catch critical issues that they are facing versus what we think is going on. Armed with sticky notes, markers, and a dry erase board, we selected several categories as our topics of discussion. We wanted to know what our Brown Girls hoped to get out of this program that was explicitly designed for them. Our current girls were familiar with our mentors and were quick to jump in with ideas to improve the program. They didn't hesitate to provide thoughtful feedback from the current Brown Girls Mentoring program. Although our future girls were not as familiar with the program like our vets, they still offered fresh ideas that we had not thought about previously. We were so impressed with the girls' ideas that we left reinvigorated for the upcoming year! The input from the ladies covered a myriad of subjects; One young lady wanted mentors who didn't "talk at" the girls but instead would "talk to" the girls. Another Brown Girl wanted a safe space to share issues that may be affecting them. We even had one Brown Girl who loved the idea of self-care from our previous sessions and encouraged us to have a 'spa day.' We thank all the young ladies who came out and participated in our Brown Girls Think Tank session. We can't wait to see you in our regular program this upcoming school year! Mark your calendars! We are preparing for our Back 2 School Glow Up event on Sunday, August 18th, 2019! We welcome school supplies as donations for the youth in our community. Backpacks, notebooks, pencils, pens, and more are appreciated. We would love to send our youth back to school with hearts full of love and bags full of supplies. If you would like to donate to our Back 2 School event, please contact us here or email us at browngirlsmentoring614@gmail.com. The Queens Came Out To Celebrate!5/15/2019 This past weekend was the 2nd Annual Generations of a Queen Mother's Day Brunch! The sold-out event was held at the Martin De Porres Center in Columbus, Ohio. It was so beautiful to see all of the mothers and daughters come out to enjoy a beautiful day full of music, words of encouragement, and of course the Brown Girl Mentoring experience.
Before we sat down, we were blessed by several performances and awards from some of our biggest supporters. Guest speaker Tammy Fournier Alaada graced the stage with words of encouragement and empowerment, while our Brown Girls Dance team stepped up and showed out!
