Brown Girls Think Big!

6/25/2019

Hello all! We have some exciting updates in today's blog, and we cannot wait to show you what our Brown Girl volunteers and mentees have been working on!

On June 15th, our volunteers met with several of our current and future Brown Girls to discuss how we can improve our Brown Girls Mentoring program.

Held at the Martin Luther King branch at 10:30 am, a light breakfast was served to help wake us up and get the mental juices flowing.

It is vital that we not only share our various areas of knowledge and skills but we should also make sure we are listening to their voices. To be a successful youth organization, we must understand what is essential to our Brown Girls and keep them engaged.

Too often adults are so busy teaching our youth, that we do not take the chance to listen to them. By listening, we can catch critical issues that they are facing versus what we think is going on.

Armed with sticky notes, markers, and a dry erase board, we selected several categories as our topics of discussion. We wanted to know what our Brown Girls hoped to get out of this program that was explicitly designed for them.

Our current girls were familiar with our mentors and were quick to jump in with ideas to improve the program. They didn't hesitate to provide thoughtful feedback from the current Brown Girls Mentoring program. Although our future girls were not as familiar with the program like our vets, they still offered fresh ideas that we had not thought about previously.

We were so impressed with the girls' ideas that we left reinvigorated for the upcoming year!

The input from the ladies covered a myriad of subjects; One young lady wanted mentors who didn't "talk at" the girls but instead would "talk to" the girls. Another Brown Girl wanted a safe space to share issues that may be affecting them. We even had one Brown Girl who loved the idea of self-care from our previous sessions and encouraged us to have a 'spa day.'

We thank all the young ladies who came out and participated in our Brown Girls Think Tank session. We can't wait to see you in our regular program this upcoming school year!
